A one-day conference at Leeds School of Arts, Leeds Beckett University, on Saturday 19 October 2024 exploring how typographic theories and propositions can manifest in practice, can be used to explain practice, and become practice. The conference aims to bring typographic theory and practice closely together across a range of contexts and applications.

Contributions are welcome in the form of papers from academics and professional practitioners of graphic design and typography, independent scholars, PhD students, and anyone with an interest in these subjects.

Key topics of exploration include but are not limited to:
Typographic hierarchy
Spacing (micro and macro)
Standards
Principles
Copy editing
Efficient work flows
Automation of tasks
Relations between theory and practice
Typesetting conventions
Editorial style
Legibility issues
Dynamic grid structures
Changing historical theories
Technological advances
Typographic furniture (footnotes, page numbers, running heads)

We are delighted to share that Professor Paul Luna, author of ‘Typography: A Very Short Introduction’ (Oxford University Press), will present a keynote lecture.

The Typography Theory Practice Conference is organised by Fraser Muggeridge, Professor of Design, Leeds Beckett University. Selected papers may provide the basis of a subsequent publication.

Proposals must include:
The participant’s email address
Up to 5 keywords
Professional or institutional affiliation (where relevant)
The paper’s title
An abstract of no more than 300 words
A biography of no more than 100 words
Up to 3 images (where appropriate)

All proposals will be double peer-reviewed with notification sent on 30 June 2024.
Conference tickets will be £25.00 with a £10.00 concessionary rate for students.
